SInce the app is a music player and not a service, there is no justification for a subscription. You could get a streaming deck, but I have computers laying around and JRiver will run on even the most modest systems. It’ll run on a raspberry pi, so really it doesn’t need much at all. I found J-River great for that purpose but was tired of having a separate routine for using Spotify as I started streaming more and more. Both J-River and Roon handled my whole house streaming duties mostly well with some expected hiccups along the way. But Roon still handles all my whole home streaming when I need that as well.
