Violet becomes obsessed by a book of fairy tales her husband has locked away in a safe. Paranoid hallucinations begin to haunt her and she starts to question her sanity.

Meanwhile, vulnerable young women are starting to disappear from the nearby asylum. Soon Violet herself is interned in the asylum for treatment only to discover, on coming out, that her husband has hired a nanny while she has been away, the beautiful, enigmatic Clara. The brutality of the asylum is nothing compared to the horrors that now lie in wait.

The Book Collector shows a wry and sly mind at work throughout. Scottish literature would be thinner without this kind of challenging and cleverly-wrought writing. Alice Thompson, one-time keyboard player for Eighties band The Woodentops, is now an established novelist, who has won praise from Ian Rankin and Stephen King. The horror master would no doubt approve of this slim Edwardian-era gothic, too, recalling as it does both Rebecca and The Silence Of The Lambs.

The Book Collector throws the essential elements of the gothic chiller into a blender and what emerges is something between pastiche and critique, in which its author never loses sight of the need to give her readers, first and foremost, an unputdownable yarn.

Expertly combining compelling storytelling with a cleverly constructed, elegant and metaphor-ridden style. A gothic music video of a novel that whirls with weirdness A dark, compelling novel with strong themes of paranoia and strange eroticism throughout.

Burnt Island is steeped in self-awareness, as a book about the process and effect of writing might be. Alice Thompson was born and brought up in Edinburgh. Alice is a past winner of a Creative Scotland Award.

She is now lecturer in Creative Writing at Edinburgh University. I cannot fault this book in any way; Violet’s character builds to a superb climax as she suffers unjustly at the hand of a fairy tail nightmare. The clash of worlds intertwined with love and obsession form an explosive crisscrossing of fantasy and reality.

A dark novella set in th Edwardian period, told for the point of view of young woman called Violet. Following the birth of her son Violet starts to realise that her perfect life is not so perfect.

A young woman marries a rich, noble widower after a whirlwind romance. Regrets soon set in when this supposed “fairytale match” turns out to be disappointingly different from what was bargained for. The same description could more or less sum up my relationship with this frustrating novel. On another level, the novel is also an Angela-Carteresque feminist fairy tale retelling — which is wholly appropriate considering that at the dark heart of its plot lies a precious edition of a book of fairy tales.

First of all, traditional Gothic tales were strong on atmosphere, with descriptions of settings being particularly important. I challenge any reader however to give a decent description of the buildings where the action in this book takes place. Everything remains vague and unreal. Indeed, the novel at times reminds me of some modernist stagings of 19th Century opera where the traditional lavish scenery is replaced by symbolic minimalist props. Even the language is bare and spare, sometimes bordering on the simplistic, with some concepts put across with the subtlety of a sledgehammer.

The problem however is that neither the protagonist, nor the other characters ever seem develop. Nor are we given any background to them beyond what is strictly necessary for the story to work. They seem to be archetypes rather than flesh and blood characters. Just as in fairy tales, I hear you say. Some readers were lavish in their praises of this novel, so mine could be just an issue of taste.

It might well be that others were drawn to the same elements which put me off. Indeed, I look forward to reading other Alice Thompson novels which might make me change my mind about her work. Book preview The Book Collector – Alice Thompson Chapter 1 She waited, sitting on the window seat, for the carriage to drive up the long avenue to their country house. How old are you? He looked at her. A petulant look crossed his face at her refusal to engage in his paradoxical conversation.

The mischievousness had left him. Rose is just the name he called me. She could see in his eyes that he liked what he saw. Home Ebooks Gothic.
