Verified Purchase. I’ve recently received the Kindle edition of the book, so I’ve not had time to fully read the book.
Therefore, this review is based solely on my thoughts about the Kindle presentation of the material, and not the material itself.
My goal is to help people decide whether to purchase the Kindle or the paperback book, not whether the book itself rates 4 stars. First, the lack of a physical DVD that accompanies the paperback is not a problem. If you’ve got a broadband connection and an hour or two to wait, you’re covered.
Regarding the layout of the content, it works pretty well using a larger second monitor to display the pages while you perform the included lessons. I use a inch LCD at work. Most of the screen captures are large enough to read easily. However, there a few figures in the book that are too small to read on a standard kindle.
I wish the images included in the kindle version were a little higher quality. You don’t notice it often, but when you look closely to view smaller images, you can see. Fortunately, these problem images are pretty rare. The color reproduction on a monitor is good. Viewing the book on a standard size kindle, in greyscale and at a much smaller size, things get more difficult. The text of the book, and the larger images are fine, but smaller, more detailed images like complete-screen captures are hard to view at times.
But I am deducting a star from the rating because of this limitation. On the plus side, I’d rather deal with the occasional muddy image in exchange for not having to hold a thick paperback open while performing the book’s lessons. Having the information easily at hand, alongside a running copy of Premiere, is a much better tradeoff to me.
And I still plan to read the book on my kindle, away from the computer, to get a feel for Premiere. Finally,the lower cost of the kindle edition at the time of my purchase factors in my evaluation, too.
In summary, I prefer the kindle edition, but might not feel this way if I were using a standard kindle or tablet with this book. This review applies to the Kindle version of the book, which I like a lot. I downloaded the book to my 10″ Android tablet, rather than my Kindle device, because the illustrations and diagrams are all in color. That works very well; I actually like it better than having the hard-copy book, because I can perform searches on the material when the index comes up empty.
The book itself is up to Adobe’s usual standards. It is suitable for the novice to intermediate editor, although complete newbies may be confused and intimidated. If you consider yourself to fall in that category, I’d encourage you to get your feet wet with Premiere Elements. It’s a surprisingly powerful video editor, with just about all the features that Premiere Pro had a few years ago.
I got the book because I’ve been away from video editing for about a decade, and I am now getting back into it.

However editing is different to graphics, much more immediate and unfortunately this book doesn’t tell you what can go wrong or how to fix it when it does. For a virtually complete novice such as myself this was incredibly frustrating. It has a lot of information, much of it very useful but very overwhelming if you haven’t even got the basics down.
I gave up and turned to You Tube instead, learned a lot, understood more through trial and error then returned to the book which I found easier to understand with a bit of prior knowledge and a greater overview in my head.

I did not agree, but if you can’t attend a classroom based course, these books and associated video back up, make a useful substitute.
Having used previous editions I have to say that I don’t find this edition for CS6 as polished as previous versions. There is a feeling of the text being a bit rushed and not quite as well checked out as it could have been in some places.
For instance the text says to switch back to the project panel, but fails to tell you how. There are a lot of screen shots illustrating the text, but some are too small or too dark to read without a magnifying glass.
