I’m involved in a project that requires Windows Datacenter licenses and a mix of and VMs no matter if they’re R2 or not. After the huge feat by Microsoft’s phone support giving me 7 different answers to a single boolean question depending on what departament or what person in the same department grabs the phone, I’ll share it with you with the hope of someone giving me a bit of light:.

After that call, the R2 versions came to my mind. She didn’t sound very convincent Call 5 MS phone To double check : “no way, you can’t.

Tie break : “yes, you have unlimited downgrade. But I wanted to test that phone acting like I already bought the product.. And the VLSC guy that took the phone told me that “yes, you can downgrade to R2 but just because is freshly released, they can remove it anytime”. So, how would one activate a Standard VM if the host is DataCenter which is allowed to run all previous versions?

AVMA doesn’t work for anything lower than Are we supposed to activate online using the Hosts OEM key? OEM server only has host key on label, not a guest key too What do I do when activating? Use the key from VLSC for that install? In a year when that key runs out as the subscription ends, wont the VM become not activated?

That has nothing to do with activation keys, nor does it stop any machine from working. You will be using a key from another VL , in this case but the license is still valid because the license is coming from MS does not validate the licensing in any way.

It is up to you to be compliant. Chris Microsoft. I’d like to know the answer to this too. I thought if you get , you can still run and R2.

Two previous versions. In the case of an eventual “no” What’s the situation? A shop is now making me an offer of a Datacenter license. They say it’s an OEM license without first install, so once I activate it, it will bind to my machine. That’s illegal, right? I mean, even in the case it works, you do need the label to be in compliance, don’t you?

Instead of creating, storing, and using the software, for each permitted instance, you may create, store, and use an earlier version of the following editions of the software:. Call Microsoft over the phone and explain we own OEM with downgrade rights, provide the key, and activate over phone?

Not sure if that means unlimmited downgrade. It just says a generic sentence which allows to downgrade to “an earlier version”, not “any previous version” so that’s perfectly compatible with it being only 2 previous versions. Anyway, I’d go ahead with what you say if it weren’t because I’d still need the process for the downgrade: how does it work? Should I install , activate then run any special downgrade disc?

Should I straightforward install R2 and it just activates with introducing the license key? I mean: does it work if I have whatever R2 disc? You purchase You do not have to install it nor activate it. Install whichever previous version of Windows Server you want. You have to come up with the media and a key for that version of the software on your own – you can use a key that’s in use on another server if you wish – as long as you have the license, you are good.

If it does not, it will transfer you to a human – simply explain you are exercising your downgrade rights from Datacenter. They will ask you some questions to prove you own Once they are satisfied you in fact own a legal copy of , they will give you an unlock code for the OS you are installing. While it is installing, eat some pizza. Another of the many reasons it’s often better to purchase server OS’s through the VL program as you would have been provided the media and activation keys needed for the previous versions and would avoid activation headaches.

Buying used may not be allowed where you are. That varies by country. But Server OEM can be sold on its own, not with a machine. Maybe I misread that In that case, I agree with you – not allowed.

If it’s a sealed disk with an OEM sticker on the disk pack, though And the same appears to be true for Jimmy wrote: So, how would one activate a Standard VM if the host is DataCenter which is allowed to run all previous versions? So, use the install from VLSC from a subscription that’s ended. Use that key from the subscription that’s ended. They won’t say ‘But that’s from an expired subscription? But if you do need to call, no worries about them checking a subscription. You are calling to activate an install, based on a key. Those are valid. Your license is expired, not the key.

They are completely different things. I’ve tried to activate online with an old key from an old subscription but that failed as the key was expired. But, very helpful and makes sense. Thank you indeed. Isn’t the sticker coming sticked to the machine? No idea, just asking. This topic has been locked by an administrator and is no longer open for commenting. Read these next
