This is what I am greeted with every time any office application is opened. However, Office has already been activated. How do I know? There is another version of Office that apparently came with this Dell computer. I did not notice this was already installed when the company first received the computer.

Microsoft Office Standard was then installed on top of whatever version of Office came with the computer. Upon first installing Standard office I am able to successfully enter the activation code. However, upon logging in the following day this message appears.

Entering an activation code does not seem to work. A yellow message bar appears at the top near the various toolbars claiming that whatever office program I happen to be using isn’t activated. Nothing I’ve been able to find about changing registry keys worked as the OEM registry key did not exist on this machine. Since this computer is joined to a domain, I decided to log into another account. It would seem that this version of Office was never truly uninstalled.

I feel certain this issue arises from multiple versions of office installed on the same machine. Was this reply helpful? Yes No. Sorry this didn’t help. Thanks for your feedback. However, pressing uninstall does cause that trial version to “disappear” from that specific domain account. Obviously, since I can still see the trial version using any other account even accounts which are not joined to the same domain the trial version was never removed. Using the troubleshooter also does not remove this trial version of Office.

I am searching for a folder somewhere on the computer which contains the trial version of office. If I can remove the trial version and reinstall Office then the activation message will probably disappear. I am needing some assistance locating this folder since the search is fairly broad.

This is what I see after re-installing Office and entering the product key. Everything is alright now, right? However, the Volume License version of Office which we have does not include Access. Whatever version this is asking to activate is different from the version covered by our product key. I used “Reset this PC” thinking that something had gotten all messed up when both the day trial version which came pre-installed as well as a second version of Office had both been installed at the same time.

However, removing the day trial version before installing our version of Office had no effect. I do however believe the day trial version of office is what the activation message is all about.

Compatibility issues with the two Office may cause this issue to keep on activating the product. We recommend that you uninstall both Office installed on your computer. Follow Option 2 on this support article to completely uninstall Office completely. After uninstalling both Office, reinstall Office that came from your work. After using Reset this PC, I uninstalled the office apps which came installed on the computer before installing Office Standard Since you have already reset your computer and uninstall the pre-installed Office, we suggest that you contact your local IT and check the status of the subscription of your Office Alright, so before re-installing Office one more time I unchecked “Give me updates for other Microsoft products when I update Windows.

After a few days of no activation message, I decided to go ahead and check that option again. Windows update ran, and updated every single office program including Access which is not even installed on the computer. Around a day later the activation message is back. Thanks for getting back to us.

We received a replacement machine from Dell last week, and it has not had this same issue. However, I almost immediately uninstalled the trial version of Office which came with the computer.

This was before I ever even joined the computer to our domain. We have had zero problems with that machine, so at first I chalked it up to something that may have been screwed up with the Windows image on the computer having those issues. I have this hunch that all of the office apps which had been “uninstalled” on the domain account were all present on another account somewhere on the local machine. This explains why Access was able to successfully update even though it was supposedly not even installed on the computer.

I’m guessing that all of the trial apps must be uninstalled on every single account on the machine otherwise we are going to continue getting the activation message since the product key we use does not cover Access. I am out of ideas as to what I can possibly do to solve this issue. This thread is locked. You can follow the question or vote as helpful, but you cannot reply to this thread. First is understanding change in license terms. Prior to , you ran the installer program, it loaded the Office program files onto the computer then requested the product key to confirm you owned a valid license to use Office. This “activated” Office on the computer. The Office product key was associated with the hardware. Depending on the type of license you were allowed to install and activate on one or two computers.

Starting with Office all of that is turned on it’s head. On first installation, and use of the product key. When you start installing Office, at the very start of the install process, you see the prompt you screen captured, requesting the email address the key is going to be assigned to.

After you provide the email address you are prompted to provide the product key. At this point the Office license is now associated with the email address, NOT the hardware it is installed on.

Second problem is pre-installed Office. I have not seen official confirmation, but my best guess is that this trial is for consumer verisons of Office. If your product key does not match the installed version, the key will not activate that preinstalled version.

So, in situations like yours, where you have a license for a different business bundle which you have to install you must FIRST uninstall the factory trial. Otherwise the activation system becomes confused. Then you can start the installation process and activation.

When you are starting installs on a new machine you must provide the email account and it’s password to assign the license to. Then you provide the product key to prove you have a valid license. This “traditional” method has become very impractical in light of the license change that requires the email account and password at the start of the install process.

In this situation, the general process is:. Office standard is licensed to be run on only one computer at a time. In Product Terms section select your language then click on download to get current license terms. Provides a good overview of the 3 basic business bundles.
